Bronx resident Matthew Berman was arrested on Monday, March 10 as part of an investigation into several overnight pro shop burglaries in Westchester, Rockland, and Fairfield counties, Westchester County Police announced on Friday, March 21.
According to the department, the investigation began in mid-February, when authorities connected a series of burglaries from golf courses as well as a sporting goods store in Yonkers.
Police said tens of thousands of dollars in high-end golf clubs and other expensive equipment were stolen in the burglaries.
After cross-referencing the information from all of the cases, a suspect was developed and a task force was created to continue the effort, which included "countless hours" of both technical and physical surveillance, the department said.
Finally, the investigation led to the March 10 arrest, which was made outside a deli in Millwood. At the time, Berman had allegedly been trying to sell a Theragun massage device taken from the Mount Kisco Country Club, which authorities said was one of two golf-related burglaries in New Castle.
Berman was soon taken to New Castle to face the music for that alleged crime, and his apartment on East 238th Street in the Bronx was searched. Inside, police allegedly found stolen golf items, a vehicle with several stolen license plates, and an imitation Beretta handgun, according to Westchester County Police.
After being interviewed, police said Berman was charged in connection to:
- Two burglaries in New Castle;
- Four in Orangetown;
- One in Norwalk;
- One in Stamford;
- Five grand larcenies in Yonkers.
Investigators also found that Berman was allegedly surveilling other golf courses and retail stores in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, police said.
The investigation is ongoing, the department said.
